For years, training industry research has demonstrated that managers and executives play a mission critical role in enabling transfer of learning to the job after employees attend training, but true Return on Investment (ROI) studies remain elusive. They can be costly and time intensive, are often unrealistic to do, and assume baseline metrics and data have been collected, which isn’t usually the case.

We assert that organizations need to be able to demonstrate the value of investment in training or other programs, a much more viable proposition than attempting to conduct ROI studies for which the effects of a single intervention cannot be isolated.

Managers and executives play a critical role in facilitating sustainable organizational change and consistent, high performance. Our research has shown there is a strong, predictable correlation between the level of management support and the extent to which employees transfer learning into on-the-job behavior change. Unfortunately, the learning needs of managers and executives on how to best support and facilitate on-the-job behavior change are often neglected.
