Healing Through Words and Color…
When I Lay My Hands on My Heart is a book of poetry and drawings—for therapists and other helping professionals working with trauma survivors—that chronicles how creativity can be used as a tool for healing trauma.
The book tells the story of an extraordinary journey from child abuse victim to a strong, brave woman who has learned to weather storms and celebrate life. It brings readers into the world of that young woman’s experience of reliving childhood sexual abuse and coping with addiction, trauma, and recovery and does so in a way that creates a gestalt experience for the reader. This book of poems and drawings is gritty, real, and painful. It is also honest, aware, and hopeful. In this time of “Me Too,” it brings us to an authentic place of sharing and learning.
To fully recover, survivors must radically reconstitute – explore all areas where we have been wounded the most: love, vulnerability, trust, self-worth, shame, and our bodies. Doing that takes all the courage we can muster. The only way out is through.
